The rapidly spreading novel “coronavirus” and its associated disease COVID-19, has impacted all our lives and forced us to alter our lifestyles. We as humans are doing our best to help stop the spreading of the virus by washing our hands-on a regular basis, keeping them sanitized and keeping our social distant with others. However, maintaining cleanliness in your car is also an important act. This might seem trifling, but this small act can take you a long way towards the greater good.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends us staying at home and practice social distancing as much as possible. However, if you are to go out to fetch some essential needs or to meet a doctor, you must ensure that your vehicle is properly cleaned and disinfected too. Not sure how to do it right? We have brought the most effective ways to keep you and your car clean during this pandemic.

1.Start the commute with a thorough wash

Before you set out to travel in your vehicle ensure you wash your hands thoroughly with soap for at least 20 seconds, using a hand sanitizer is a good idea too. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended us to use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Although you clean and disinfect your vehicle you must ensure that your hands are germfree too. Your steering wheel is constantly touched by you, you don’t want to risk transferring germs from your hands to your car again!

2.Wipe down your car

We are constantly reminded to wipe out any surface that our hands come into contact with. This includes your vehicle too! Wipe down your doorknobs and keys and steering wheelEnsure you disinfect all the surfaces of your vehicle that your hands come into contact with.

Ensure your car carpets are cleaned and make sure your car is vacuumed regularly. If you cannot get your car vacuumed, use a microfibre cloth and spray a bit of disinfectant and wipe the cloth over your car surfaces and carpets.

3.Which cleaners to use?

While cleaning and disinfecting your car is important, we recommend that you use cleaners and disinfectants that will not harm your vehicle surface. Among disinfectants, Lysol and Clorox are in the list of EPA approved products. You may also use liquid soap alternatively. Vigorously washing with soap and water can kill coronavirus too.

What not to use?
  • Bleach and hydrogen peroxide
We recommend you not to use bleach and hydrogen peroxide on the inside of the car since it can damage interior surfaces of your car.
  • Ammoniabased cleaners
Avoid using ammonia-based cleaners on car touch screen since it might harm the anti-glare and anti-fingerprint coating.
